Welcome to another edition of “Behind the Scenes of The Dream Doers Series”
The Dream Doers and the Summer of Secrets begins on the last day of sixth grade for Alex and Tyler and class bully Zach. But today’s edition is a flashback story of the day Alex meets Zach for the first time.
*****
Alex was three the day she met three-year-old Zach for the first time. Zach lived a few blocks away from Alex in the same neighborhood. Their moms met one day when they happened to both be out walking along the same street.
When they realized they both had kids the same age, the moms decided to meet for a play date one morning when Alex’s older sister and older brothers were in school.
And since Alex’s next door neighbor Anson was also three years old, Alex’s mom invited Anson and his mom over to Alex’s house, too.
Alex was excited about the chance to play with boys her own age. All of her brothers were older than her and thought she was too girly to play with them. So she usually just played by herself when her older sister was too busy to play dolls or have tea parties.
Alex dressed in a pink sundress and had her mom put a pink bow in her long brown hair. She wanted to look pretty for her new friends.
When they finally came over, the boys wanted to play outside. So the moms sat on the deck and talked while the three kids played on the swingset that had two swings, a slide and monkey bars.
The boys acted nice and friendly…until Alex, Zach and Anson all got to the top of the slide at the same time. Zach told Alex she needed to move so he could slide, but she said her brothers always let her go first.
For some reason that made Zach really mad. He yanked the pink bow out of her hair and pushed her over the side.
Her arm hit the ground first, breaking her wrist.
All three moms came running to help at the sound of Alex’s cries. When Alex’s mom asked what happened, Zach said that Alex just fell by accident. Anson nodded and said Zach was telling the truth.
Alex wanted to tell her mom that Zach pushed her, but she didn’t want Zach to get in trouble. Plus she didn’t want to believe any little boy could be that mean.
The only problem was that Zach just got meaner the older he got. But he was only mean to Alex. He was nice to her brothers and her parents, so nobody understood why she didn’t want to go to school when she found out they were going to be in the same kindergarten class.
